With the news of Justin Timberlake<\/strong><\/a>\u2018s Lyme disease diagnosis<\/a>, many are wondering why it seems that so many celebrities have the illness. Over the years, fans learned that some of Hollywood\u2019s biggest names were living with the medical condition, such as Justin Bieber<\/a>, Avril Lavigne<\/a>, Kelly Osbourne<\/a><\/strong> and more.<\/p>\n

Conspiracy theories about show business have formed and mutated over the years, with the most notorious being the \u201ccelebrities die in 3s<\/a>\u201d rumor. So, why is Lyme disease such a common diagnosis?<\/p>\n

Below, Hollywood Life<\/strong> explains everything you need to know about Lyme disease and which celebrities were diagnosed with it.<\/p>\n

Why Do So Many Celebrities Have Lyme Disease?<\/h2>\n

It seems that a large portion of Hollywood has revealed Lyme disease diagnoses, and that\u2019s because the illness is common in the United States. More than 400,000 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with Lyme disease each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a> (CDC).<\/p>\n

Lyme Disease Symptoms<\/h2>\n

The most commonly reported symptoms of Lyme disease include fever, headache, fatigue, facial paralysis, an irregular heartbeat, arthritis and a skin rash called erythema migrans, according to the CDC.<\/p>\n

Can You Die From Lyme Disease?<\/h2>\n

Yes, but only in rare cases. According to the Cleveland Clinic<\/a>, Lyme disease has resulted in few deaths, and there are treatments for the illness. However, if it\u2019s left untreated, symptoms may linger for years.<\/p>\n

Justin Bieber<\/h2>\n

In a since-deleted January 2020 Instagram caption, Justin revealed he had \u201crecently\u201d been diagnosed with Lyme disease in addition to a \u201cserious case of chronic mono which affected [his] skin, brain function, energy, and overall health.\u201d<\/p>\n

Avril Lavigne<\/h2>\n

Since her 2015 diagnosis, Avril has opened up about her battle against Lyme disease. She once wrote on her website that she had \u201caccepted death and could feel [her] body shutting down.\u201d<\/p>\n

Justin Timberlake<\/h2>\n

In July 2025, Justin shared a lengthy Instagram post about his diagnosis, admitting he would \u201cbe on stage \u2026 in a massive amount of nerve pain or, just feeling crazy fatigue or sickness.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAmong other things, I\u2019ve been battling some health issues, and was diagnosed with Lyme disease \u2014 which I don\u2019t say so you feel bad for me \u2014 but to shed some light on what I\u2019ve been up against behind the scenes,\u201d the \u201cMirrors\u201d crooner wrote. \u201cIf you\u2019ve experienced this disease or know someone who has \u2014 then you\u2019re aware: living with this can be relentlessly debilitating, both mentally and physically.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shania Twain<\/h2>\n

In 2003, Shania was bitten by a tick, which resulted in Lyme disease. In her doc, Not Just a Girl<\/em>, the music artist said her voice \u201cwas never the same again.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought I\u2019d lost my voice forever,\u201d Shania admitted. \u201cI thought that was it, [and] I would never, ever sing again.\u201d<\/p>\n

Riley Keough<\/h2>\n

Riley told Vanity Fair<\/em> in 2023 that she lives with Lyme disease.<\/p>\n

Yolanda Hadid<\/h2>\n

Yolanda has opened up about her condition over the years. In September 2024, she wrote in an Instagram<\/a> post that she had been battling Lyme disease for 15 years.<\/p>\n

Bella Hadid<\/h2>\n

Bella was diagnosed with Lyme disease in 2012 and updated fans in August 2023 about her journey.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have so much gratitude for and perspective on life, this 100+ days of Lyme, chronic disease, co infection treatment, almost 15 years of invisible suffering, was all worth it if I\u2019m able to, God willing, have a lifetime of spreading love from a full cup, and being able to truly be myself, for the first time ever,\u201d Bella wrote via Instagram<\/a> at the time.<\/p>\n

Ben Stiller<\/h2>\n

In October 2011, Ben told The Hollywood Reporter<\/em> <\/a>that he caught the disease in Nantucket, Massachusetts, \u201ca couple years\u201d prior.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy knee became inflamed and they couldn\u2019t figure out what it was, then they found out it was Lyme,\u201d the actor-director told the publication. \u201cI\u2019m symptom-free now, but Lyme doesn\u2019t ever leave your system. It\u2019s a really tough thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Alec Baldwin<\/h2>\n

Alec was infected by the bacteria around 20 years ago. During a 2021 podcast<\/a> interview, he recalled how he got bitten by a tick.<\/p>\n

\u201cAugust of one summer I was standing on my friend\u2019s porch at night, and it was a cool evening \u2014 it wasn\u2019t a hot, steamy evening \u2014 and I felt literally this wave go over my back and over my shoulders and kind of wrap around me like a chill,\u201d the actor said. \u201cAnd I got just attacked. It came like someone snapped their fingers and put a spell on me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Amy Schumer<\/h2>\n

Amy broke the news of her diagnosis in a September 2020 social media post, noting she may have had the illness \u201cfor years.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kelly Osbourne<\/h2>\n

In her memoir, There Is No F*cking Secret: Letters From a Badass Bitch<\/em>, Kelly unpacked her Lyme disease diagnosis and journey. She was bitten by a tick in England in 2004 and went undiagnosed for years.<\/p>\n
