Tracey Bregman<\/strong> has portrayed Lauren Fenmore on The Young and the Restless<\/em><\/a> \u2014 and later The Bold and the Beautiful<\/em> <\/a>\u2014 since 1983, but the character, who is now a fan favorite, wasn\u2019t always loved.<\/p>\n

Bregman, 62, opened up about the backlash she received for her character\u2019s actions on the show on the Tuesday, August 26, episode of CBS\u2019s \u201cSoapy<\/a>\u201d podcast.<\/p>\n

\u201cHaving to be mean to Beth Maitland<\/strong>, I mean, come on,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Bregman and Maitland, 67, who plays Traci Abbott, are close friends, which made it difficult to bully her early on in the two characters\u2019 story line.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe Young and the Restless, like most soap operas, is known for its shocking plot twists that fans don\u2019t see coming \u2014 and sometimes they are equally surprising to the cast members. For instance, Nick, Sharon and Phyllis\u2019 love triangle \u2014 following the tragic death of Sharon\u2019s daughter Cassie \u2014 takes the cake for most [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cAnd I knew, because we were so close, how she was really feeling about a lot of things,\u201d Bregman continued. \u201cAnd it was a story that was kind of based on her being a little overweight and being conscious about that. And then, I had to say the worst things to her, and Beth will tell you that I cried more than she did over it because I could barely get it out sometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n

A lot of Bregman\u2019s bullying was around Traci being overweight \u2014 something the audience was not happy to see Bregman mock.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I will tell you, it was a double-edged sword, playing the mean girl, because I would get death threats and people tried to run me off the freeway. It was bad,\u201d she continued. \u201cThere were some bad parts of it that I never really talked about, actually. I\u2019ve never really talked about it.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Bregman also brought up the \u201cfun times\u201d the two of them had together on set, which, ironically, included when their characters got into a physical fight. Through it all, she didn\u2019t complain. As she put it, \u201cIt was also an extraordinary story for us to play as actors.\u201d<\/p>\n

More than that, Bregman\u2019s on-screen husband, Christian LeBlanc<\/strong><\/a>, who portrays Michael Baldwin, added that playing the villain requires \u201cvulnerability and humanity underneath the mean thing,\u201d meaning Bregman\u2019s internal struggle over her character\u2019s meanness probably helped the character.<\/p>\n
