King Charles III<\/strong><\/a> is decently healthy at the age of 76. However, the monarch, who is married to his wife, Queen Camilla<\/strong><\/a>, revealed he was diagnosed with\u00a0a \u201cform of cancer\u201d<\/a> that was discovered following a surgery. The diagnosis reportedly \u201cshocked\u201d multiple insiders from Buckingham Palace, according to People<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was really shocked when I heard it,\u201d the source told the publication on February 6, before adding, \u201cHe has not looked himself. I put it down to grief \u2014 he\u2019d had two deaths close together \u2014 but maybe he wasn\u2019t well, without realizing so. It would take it out of him.\u201d<\/p>\n

King Charles\u2019 health has been at the upmost importance for the Palace since he became king after the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth II<\/strong><\/a>, who lived to the age of 96. In May 2025, his son Prince Harry made a rare comment about his estrangement from his family and noted he wanted \u201creconciliation\u201d with his father.<\/p>\n

\u201cLife is precious. I don\u2019t know how much longer my father has,\u201d Harry acknowledged in a BBC interview that month. \u201cHe won\u2019t speak to me because of this security stuff. But it would be nice to reconcile. \u2026\u00a0I would love reconciliation with my family. There\u2019s no point in continuing to fight anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n

Buckingham Palace released a statement<\/a> on January 17, 2024, announcing that King Charles was going to be hospitalized for an upcoming surgery.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn common with thousands of men each year, The King has sought treatment for an enlarged prostate,\u201d the statement read. \u201cHis Majesty\u2019s condition is benign and he will attend hospital next week for a corrective procedure. The King\u2019s public engagements will be postponed for a short period of recuperation.\u201d<\/p>\n

News of King Charles\u2019 surgery broke the same day that Kensington Palace announced that his daughter-in-law,\u00a0Kate\u00a0<\/strong>Middleton<\/b><\/a>, was hospitalized for a \u201cplanned abdominal surgery.\u201d The Palace confirmed that Kate\u2019s surgery<\/a> was successful and she was recovering.<\/p>\n

What Is an Enlarged Prostate?<\/h2>\n

An enlarged prostate, called Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), can cause bladder, urinary tract or kidney problems, according to the Mayo Clinic<\/a>. The condition becomes more common with age, especially in men over 50. Treatments include medicines, surgery and other procedures.<\/p>\n

How Is King Charles III\u2019s Health Today?<\/h2>\n

Charles and Camilla were seen leaving The London Clinic on January 29, 2024. The palace gave the latest update on Charles\u2019 health that same day \u201cThe King was this afternoon discharged from hospital following planned medical treatment and has rescheduled forthcoming public engagements to allow for a period of private recuperation,\u201d the palace said in a statement, according to ABC News<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Royal Family\u2019s Instagram account released a statement<\/a> on January 29, as well. \u201cThank you to all those who have sent their good wishes during The King\u2019s hospital stay,\u201d the statement read. \u201cHis Majesty is delighted that his diagnosis is having a positive impact on public health awareness.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shortly after his procedure, Camilla visited Aberdeen, Scotland, and in a video by ITV reporter\u00a0Chris Ship,\u00a0<\/strong>she said that he was doing well after the procedure. \u201cHe\u2019s fine, thank you very much. Looking forward to getting back to work,\u201d she said in the clip shared on X.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n

A palace insider also opened up about why the monarch decided to be candid about the health issues and disclose exactly what was going on. \u201cIt was sensible to be more open about it, as otherwise, people might have thought the worst,\u201d the source told PEOPLE<\/em> <\/a>for a January 25, 2024 report.<\/p>\n

On January 26, 2024, Queen Camilla was seen<\/a> leaving the London Clinic where her husband was staying. As she walked out, she told reporters in a separate online video that Charles is \u201cfine.\u201d PEOPLE<\/em><\/a>\u00a0reported that the king was doing well following the procedure.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, doctors discovered that Charles has a form of cancer, Buckingham Palace confirmed in a public statement on February 5, 2024.<\/p>\n

\u201cDuring The King\u2019s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted. Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer,\u201d the palace\u2019s statement read. \u201cHis Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties. Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual.\u201d<\/p>\n

Charles spoke out about the support he\u2019s received since his going public with his diagnosis in an Instagram post<\/a> on February 11, 2024. \u201cI would like to express my most heartfelt thanks for the many messages of support and good wishes I have received in recent days,\u201d he said. \u201cAs all those who have been affected by cancer will know, such kind thoughts are the greatest comfort and encouragement.\u201d<\/p>\n

King Charles III\u2019s Past Health Issues<\/h2>\n

King Charles has dealt with minimal health issues in his lifetime. Back in 2003, when he was still Prince Charles, he hurt his hernia laying hedges in the gardens at one of his estates and underwent a \u201cfairly routine operation,\u201d according to the\u00a0BBC<\/em><\/a>. In 2008, he had a \u201cminor and routine\u201d procedure to remove a non-cancerous growth from his face, according to the Associated Press<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

King Charles has also had COVID-19<\/a> twice. He first tested positive for the virus in March 2020 as the worldwide pandemic began. At the time, his spokesperson told PEOPLE<\/em><\/a> that Charles was in \u201cgood spirits\u201d and continued working at home amid \u201cmild symptoms.\u201d He tested positive for the virus a second time in February 2022. Clarence House said in a statement that he was \u201cself-isolating\u201d until he was free to resume his royal duties.<\/p>\n
