William \u201cBilly\u201d Evans<\/strong>, the partner of former Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes<\/strong><\/a>, has remained a steadfast presence in her life amid her legal troubles and imprisonment<\/a>. An heir to the Evans Hotels chain in San Diego, William met Elizabeth in 2017, during the unraveling of Theranos. The couple reportedly married in a private ceremony in 2019 and have two children together: a son born in 2021 and a daughter born in early 2023.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Elizabeth had founded the healthcare company Theranos in 2003, which quickly became noteworthy because it had created a blood test that claimed to require only a small amount of blood. The Silicon Valley-based company grew and received investments for years before announcing a partnership with Walgreens in 2013. In 2015, The Wall Street Journal\u00a0<\/em><\/a>began publishing investigative stories surrounding the company and revealed that the blood tests weren\u2019t accurate. After being exposed, the company faced legal issues related to the false tests and was barred from certain medical practices.<\/p>\n

Amidst the issues Theranos was already facing, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) charged Elizabeth and the company\u2019s former president, Ramesh Balwani<\/strong>, who is also her ex-husband, with fraud for swindling investors out of $700 million via false advertising in 2018. Theranos agreed to a half-million dollar settlement against the fraud charges, according to an SEC press release<\/a>. Between 2016 and 2018 (when the company shared that it was shutting down), hundreds of Theranos employees were laid off. Elizabeth started her trial for the wire fraud and conspiracy charges on September 8, 2021, via ABC News<\/em><\/a>, <\/em>and was found guilty of four out of 11 counts of fraud for claims made to investors and patients, including three counts of wire fraud and one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud.<\/p>\n

Despite Elizabeth serving an 11-year prison sentence for fraud, William has embarked on a new venture in the biotech field. <\/span>He founded Haemanthus, a startup aiming to develop diagnostic technology using small biological samples\u2014a concept reminiscent of Theranos\u2019s original mission.<\/span> Reports suggest that Holmes is informally advising Evans on this project from prison, raising eyebrows given her past.<\/span><\/p>\n

Elizabeth Holmes And William \u201cBilly\u201d Evans<\/h2>\n

William\u2019s grandparents were the founders of the San Diego area-based Evans Hotel Group. Anne<\/strong> and\u00a0William D. <\/strong>Evans <\/strong>founded the hotel company in 1953. William D. died in 1984, and the couple\u2019s two oldest children\u00a0Grace Evans Cherahore\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0William L. Evans\u00a0<\/strong>took on leadership roles, according to the company\u2019s website<\/a>. Billy doesn\u2019t work for the hotel group. His only public social media profile is for his LinkedIn, which indicates that he was a 2015 graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.). His last job listed on the profile was as the manager of special projects for Luminar Technology from February 2017 to January 2019.\u00a0 Elizabeth and William began dating in 2017 and tied the knot in 2019 at a secret wedding. The two had a son, William Holmes Evans<\/strong>, in July 2021, and welcomed their second child in late 2022 or early 2023, but that baby\u2019s gender and birthdate have yet to be revealed.<\/p>\n

While both of their social media accounts are private, Vanity Fair\u00a0<\/em>reporter\u00a0Nick Bilton\u00a0<\/strong>tweeted out screenshots<\/a> taken from Billy\u2019s social media page, including one where he wrote a sweet birthday message to Elizabeth. \u201cHappy bday to my best friend. The last year has been the best I\u2019ve ever had,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n

How Did Elizabeth And Billy Meet?<\/h2>\n

Billy and the Theranos founder met at a party in the Bay Area in 2017, according to The New York Post<\/em><\/a>. The two got engaged in 2019, and invitations were sent out quickly after. Billy showed his love for the former CEO by giving her a signet ring from MIT, a colleague told The Post<\/em>. \u201cBilly and the MIT ring, they are inseparable. He always wore it on his pinky finger,\u201d the colleague said. \u201cHe could snap his fingers and have a triple-A diamond engagement ring instantly if he wanted to. But if you give her some extravagant ring, it could end up owned by the feds if she has to give up her material possessions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite the two seeming smitten with each other, there has allegedly been push back from the Evans family. \u201cHis family is like, \u2018What the f**k are you doing?\u2019 It\u2019s like he\u2019s been brainwashed. [He says,] \u2018The media has it all wrong about her,\u2019\u201d a source told\u00a0The Post\u00a0<\/em>in 2019. Billy\u2019s dad also allegedly showed up to Elizabeth\u2019s trial in disguise, claiming to be named \u201cHanson,\u201d according to NPR.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n

What Does William Do?<\/h2>\n

While William\u2019s current job situation isn\u2019t clear, he\u2019s had quite an impressive resume, according to his LinkedIn. As an MIT student, he interned with Qualcomm Ventures and Encore Capital Group. He later had seasonal positions as a summer analyst at Altman Vilandrie & Company and as a summer associate at The Boston Consulting Group. He was also a Student Brand Ambassador for Red Bull, while going through school. After graduating, he was a Strategy and Analytics Leadership Program Analyst for LinkedIn from July 2015 until February 2017. He left the social media site to become the Manager of Special Projects at Luminar Technologies, which he left in January 2019. Some people speculated that he left the company due to the risk for bad publicity related to his relationship with Elizabeth, according to\u00a0The Post<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Elizabeth And William\u2019s Family<\/h2>\n

Elizabeth and William have two children, including William Holmes Evans, who was born in July 2021. Elizabeth\u2019s first pregnancy caused her trial to be delayed, via ABC News<\/a>. <\/em>Other than pushing the trial back further than it had been due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it also led to the judge allowing a quiet room on premises that would allow Elizabeth to spend time with her baby during breaks in the trial.<\/p>\n

In a 2025 interview with <\/span>People<\/span><\/em><\/a>, she shared that she still collected milk for her child, saying, \u201cIt was important to me because it was a way to love her in here.\u201d In addition, Elizabeth went on to say,\u00a0\u201cIt kills me to put my family through pain the way I do.\u201d She added, \u201cBut when I look back on my life, and these angels that have come into it, I can get through anything. It makes me want to fight for all of it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Moving Forward<\/h2>\n

Elizabeth faced up to 20 years in prison for her wire fraud charges and received a sentence of 11 years. She tried appealing, but that appeal was denied, and she entered prison on May 30, 2023.<\/p>\n

In 2019, he supposedly was considering starting his own company and had traveled to South Africa for a potential opportunity. He will raise their two children on his own while Elizabeth is behind bars.<\/p>\n

Elizabeth broke her silence on being incarcerated to <\/span>People<\/span><\/em><\/a>\u00a0in an article published on February 12, 2025, saying, <\/span>\u201cThe people I love the most have to walk away as I stand here, a prisoner, and my reality sinks in.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
