This year&#8217;s Indy 500 qualifying format spans two intense days\u2014Saturday, May 17 and Sunday, May 18\u2014and will determine the starting grid for the 33-car field in &#8220;The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.&#8221; Here\u2019s everything you need to know about the Indy 500 qualifying schedule, including key times, formats, and how drivers earn their place in the field<\/p>\n<p><!----><\/p>\n<h2 displaynav=\"true\" class=\"\" data-v-24ed9219=\"\">2025 Indy 500 Qualifications Format<\/h2>\n<p displaynav=\"true\" class=\"ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt6 mg-b-15 article-content\" data-v-24ed9219=\"\">Qualifications weekend runs from Saturday, May 17, to Sunday, May 18. Here&#8217;s how each day breaks down:<\/p>\n<h3 displaynav=\"true\" class=\"\" data-v-24ed9219=\"\"><strong>Saturday, May 17<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p displaynav=\"true\" class=\"ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt6 mg-b-15 article-content\" data-v-24ed9219=\"\"><strong>Full-Field Qualifying<\/strong> (11 a.m. \u2013 5:50 p.m. ET)<\/p>\n<ul displaynav=\"true\" class=\"mg-b-15 article-content\" data-v-59d2807c=\"\" data-v-24ed9219=\"\">\n<li class=\"ff-h\" data-v-59d2807c=\"\"><span data-v-59d2807c=\"\">The fastest 30 cars will secure provisional spots, with positions 13\u201330 (or 13\u201333, if applicable) locked in and unable to re-qualify on Sunday.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"ff-h\" data-v-59d2807c=\"\"><span data-v-59d2807c=\"\">After each car has made one attempt, teams can make additional runs using two lanes. Lane 1 (priority) requires withdrawing from a previous time but offers faster access. Lane 2 allows re-qualifying without losing an existing time.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"ff-h\" data-v-59d2807c=\"\"><span data-v-59d2807c=\"\">If more than 33 cars are entered (there are 34 entered in 2025), any outside the top 30 on Saturday are not considered qualified and must return on Sunday for Last Chance Qualifying.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 displaynav=\"true\" class=\"\" data-v-24ed9219=\"\"><strong>Sunday, May 18<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p displaynav=\"true\" class=\"ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt6 mg-b-15 article-content\" data-v-24ed9219=\"\"><strong>Top 12 Qualifying<\/strong> (4:05 p.m. &#8211; 5:05 p.m. ET)<\/p>\n<ul displaynav=\"true\" class=\"mg-b-15 article-content\" data-v-59d2807c=\"\" data-v-24ed9219=\"\">\n<li class=\"ff-h\" data-v-59d2807c=\"\"><span data-v-59d2807c=\"\">Top 12 Qualifying determines positions 7\u201312.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"ff-h\" data-v-59d2807c=\"\"><span data-v-59d2807c=\"\">Cars run in order from slowest to fastest based on Saturday times. Each gets one guaranteed attempt.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"ff-h\" data-v-59d2807c=\"\"><span data-v-59d2807c=\"\">The fastest six advance to the Firestone Fast Six to compete for the pole.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p displaynav=\"true\" class=\"ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt6 mg-b-15 article-content\" data-v-24ed9219=\"\"><strong>Last Chance Qualifying<\/strong> (5:15 p.m. &#8211; 6:15 p.m. ET)<\/p>\n<ul displaynav=\"true\" class=\"mg-b-15 article-content mg-b-25\" data-v-59d2807c=\"\" data-v-24ed9219=\"\">\n<li class=\"ff-h\" data-v-59d2807c=\"\"><span data-v-59d2807c=\"\">Last Chance Qualifying determines positions 31-33.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"ff-h\" data-v-59d2807c=\"\"><span data-v-59d2807c=\"\">Each car gets one guaranteed attempt in Last Chance Qualifying, with multiple runs allowed until time expires. Before the final 10 minutes, cars may take an extra cool-down lap to help reset and rejoin the line.
