Parks and Recreation<\/em> fans have mourned the deaths of some of the show\u2019s most memorable cast members \u2014 and their loved ones \u2014 over the years.<\/p>\n

NBC viewers tuned in weekly to watch the mockumentary series<\/a>, which aired from 2009 to 2015, about employees working for the parks department in the fictional town of Pawnee, Indiana. Parks and Recreation<\/em> featured a stacked cast that included Amy Poehler, Rashida Jones, Nick Offerman, Aziz Ansari, Aubrey Plaza, Chris Pratt, Adam Scott, Rob Lowe, Retta<\/strong> and Billy Eichner<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Since the sitcom came to an end, the cast has been struck by tragedy<\/a>. Harris Wittels<\/strong>, who many remember as an animal control employee, died in 2015 at age 30 after an overdose. Before his death, Wittels candidly discussed how he developed a drug addiction when he was 12 years old.<\/p>\n

The Parks and Recreation<\/em> cast was hit with another surprising death when Jonathan Joss<\/strong> was shot in June 2025 after an alleged altercation with a neighbor. Officers detained their suspect, Sigfredo Alvarez Ceja, after he initially fled the scene in a vehicle. He was booked for murder amid Joss\u2019 husband, Tristan Kern de Gonzales, claiming the incident was the result of a hate crime.<\/a><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe Parks and Recreation cast filled homes with laughs and love during its seven-season run on NBC, but since the show ended, fans have still been able to see their favorite faces from the group in a slew of high-profile projects. Amy Poehler (Leslie Knope), Nick Offerman (Ron Swanson), Aziz Ansari (Tom Haverford), Adam Scott [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Authorities, however, denied that Joss\u2019 death was a result of a hate crime after conducting an investigation. Several of Joss\u2019 costars \u2014 including Chris Pratt<\/strong> \u2014 paid tribute to the actor, who played Ken Hotate.<\/p>\n

Joss was killed in June 2025 after an alleged altercation with a neighbor in San Antonio, Texas. Authorities were dispatched to a shooting where they found Joss lying \u201cnear the roadway.\u201d<\/p>\n

There were \u201clife saving measures\u201d attempted while waiting for EMS<\/a>, but Joss was ultimately pronounced dead at the scene when paramedics arrived.<\/p>\n

Offerman released a statement about how Joss\u2019 former costars were mourning his death, saying, \u201cThe cast has been texting together about it all day and we\u2019re just heartbroken. Jonathan was such a sweet guy and we loved having him as our Chief Ken Hotate. A terrible tragedy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Aubrey Plaza\u2019s Husband Jeff Baena<\/h3>\n

Plaza suffered a loss when her husband died by suicide in January 2025 at age 47.<\/p>\n

For Parks and Rec<\/em> viewers<\/a>, Briscoe was known for his role as the beloved owner of JJ\u2019s Diner. He was hospitalized in 2017 after suffering a fall, which led to internal bleeding and heart complications. The side effects resulted in Briscoe\u2019s death at age 56.<\/p>\n

Windell Middlebrooks<\/h3>\n

Middlebrooks played Brian in one episode of Parks and Recreation<\/em> in 2009. He was found unconscious at his home in 2015 and was pronounced dead on arrival at a hospital. The cause of death was ruled to be a fatal pulmonary embolism at age 36.<\/p>\n
